Mark Harriman
Associate Director of Athletics at Caltech
Mark Harriman, the former director of campus recreation at Santa Clara University, is in his 3rd full year as Associate Director of Athletics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Harriman replaced Wendell Jack, who resigned to become athletic director at Hiram (Ohio) College and is now Athletic Director at SCIAC opponent Whittier College.
Harriman is responsible for the highly-successful Caltech recreational services program as well as managing and scheduling the school’s athletics facilities, including the Braun Center and Brown Gym.  He also will help oversee the school’s 18-sport intercollegiate athletic program.
“I am excited to become a part of a prestigious institution like Caltech,” said Harriman.  “The school has an excellent recreational program and is in the process of building a competitive intercollegiate athletics program.  I am working hard to provide the best-possible athletics and recreational opportunities to the entire campus.”
Harriman brings nearly two decades of recreational management experience to Caltech.  Most recently, he served as director of campus recreation at Santa Clara University, directing the daily operation and facility scheduling of the new $10.2 million PatMalley Fitness and Recreation Center.  In addition, he was in charge of the school’s intramural sports program, serving more than 800 participants quarterly, as well as the school’s club sports program.  He also served as liaison to a number of campus entities, including student affairs, residence life, safety services and facilities.
Prior to moving to Santa Clara, Harriman spent seven years at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo as both the associate director of recreation sports (1992-96) and interim director of recreational sports (1996-99).  During his tenure, the school opened a new $20 million recreation center in 1993 and was on the development and construction committee for the school’s $9 million multipurpose field sports complex.  In addition, he worked with student leadership groups to provide the best services for all facets of the campus.  Harriman’s other experience includes the University of Arizona (assistant dir. campus recreation, 1990-92), where he helped open a new student recreation center in 1990; UC-Irvine (asst. dir. campus recreation, 1983-90); and Loma Linda University (asst. intramural director, 1981-83).
Harriman received his B.S. in Physical Education and Health from Loma Linda University in 1980, graduating with high honors.  In 1982, he graduated Cum Laude from Long Beach State with an M.A. in Administration of Physical Education and Sport.  He is a member of the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association.
“We are extremely excited to have someone with Mark’s credentials at Caltech,” said athletic director Tim Downes.  “His vast experience at serving the recreational and athletics needs of colleges for the past two decades enables us to continue serving the Caltech community in a first-class manner.  He also will be an excellent resource for our intercollegiate coaches as an administrator.”
Caltech competes at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCAIC).
