QUANTUM HOOPS PREMIERES IN PASADENA

OCTOBER 31, 2007 (Pasadena, CA) - The award-winning feature length documentary QUANTUM HOOPS: The Caltech Basketball Story, directed by Rick Greenwald, opens for a limited engagement on November 2 nd, 2007 at Laemmle's One Colorado, 42 Miller Alley, Old Pasadena, CA, 91103 before rolling out to other cities. This is a new version of the film featuring David Duchovny as narrator.

QUANTUM HOOPS chronicles the final week of the 2006 Caltech basketball season. While most sports films celebrate the quest for a championship, QUANTUM HOOPS follows a team that is searching for a single win.  The team is currently in the midst of a 21 year losing streak - over 240 consecutive conference losses.

"I'm excited for everyone to experience the journey of what is easily the most unique college basketball experience in the country." said filmmaker Rick Greenwald.

Caltech is annually considered one of the top 5 academic institutions in the world yet its athletic department always takes a back seat to the achievements of its world-renowned faculty, Nobel Prize winners, and advancements in the world of science and technology.  The film REAL GENIUS was a
not-so-subtle take on Caltech life.

To the casual fan, the team might sound like a bad joke.  There are more valedictorians on the team than players with high school basketball experience.  In fact, the 5 seniors did not play high school basketball, yet all five are major contributors to the team.  They are roundly mocked by opposing fans as "nerds playing basketball" (the few fans that decide its even worth it to show up).  However, this season would mark an amazing turnaround from just two years ago when the team would lose by an average margin of over 60 points per game.  Against remarkable odds and adversity, the players and coaches dedication, discipline, heart, and yes, skill would make for one of the most exciting seasons in Caltech school history.   The final home game of the year would give the 5 seniors one last shot at that elusive win and an entry into the history books of college athletics.

A festival favorite, QUANTUM HOOPS was the Top 10 Audience Choice Award at the 2007 Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The film has also played at the 2007 Charlotte Film Festival and will be playing in the upcoming Starz Denver Film Festival.

BEAVERS BREAK STREAK

Beavers WIN... Beavers WIN... Beavers WIN!!!
(Jan 6, 2007) Pasadena, CA -
Caltech Men's Basketball won for the first time since Nov. 22, 2004 and ended a 59-game losing streak, rolling past Bard 81-52. The Beavers had been outscored by an average of 36 points in their first 10 games this season after taking a game to overtime in 2005-06.

Sophomore forward Travis Haussler scored 29 points on 12-for-17 shooting to lead Caltech, while Matt Dellatorre added 24. The Beavers used a 21-6 run that spanned the end of the first half and beginning of the second to break open the game.

It was also Caltech's first win against a Division III team since it defeated Principia in the 1995-96 season, a span of 207 consecutive losses. Caltech hasn't won a game in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 21 years, or 245 games. But the 59 was the most important streak, coach Roy Dow told D3hoops.com: "My immediate thing was to try to get a win for this year's group to validate what we're doing. We were playing so poorly over the last week -- we came out of the Christmas break and had a reasonably competitive game with Williams, then got smashed by the other two teams we played (Wisconsin Lutheran and Robert Morris-Springfield)."

Bard (1-10) was led by Demitrius Underwood's 18 points.

There wasn't a particularly raucous celebration, Dow says. "The first two people I saw after shaking hands, was our new president (Jean-Lou Chameau) and his wife. They just got off a 16-hour flight from Singapore. There were a few students, the women's basketball team, a couple faculty members. It wasn't a wild celebration. It was what it was."

The Beavers travel to Occidental on Jan. 10 for its SCIAC opener.
