Men's Basketball: Year in Review

This year, the Men's Basketball team observed numerous improvements over the previous season.

Team scoring increased 43%, as Junior Jordan Carlson and Freshman Bryan Hires lead the team in scoring. Team field goal percentage improved just as dramatically, from 25% in 2003-2004 to 36% this season.

Team defense improved significantly as well. Opponents' scoring dropped 17% this year, and opponents' field-goal percentage fell as well, from 55% in 2003-2004 to 46% this past season.

Part of the defensive improvement was no doubt due to improved defense inside. The team's shot-blocking more than quadrupled this year, to 2.4 blocks per game.

With a good mix of seasoned veterans and talented newcomers, the future of the program is bright.

Men's Basketball hits century mark in thrilling shootout with Redlands

In the most anticipated game of the season, the Men's Basketball team didn't disappoint in treating its fans to a special night.

A standing-room only crowd poured into the Braun Gym on Saturday night to watch a game that featured full-court presses and traps, fast breaks and thrilling plays on almost every possession, as Caltech lost 107-155.

Two of the most exciting plays for Caltech were provided by Freshman Forward Bryan Hires. With 9:48 to go in the first half, Hires blocked a Redlands three-point shot from behind, then recovered the rebound and took it in for a lay-up and the foul. Later, with 14:28 left in the second half, Hires blocked and rebounded another Redlands three point attempt, which he dished to Junior Day Ivy for the easy basket. Hires finished with a game-high 21 points, shooting a perfect 9 for 9 from the floor and 3 for 3 from the free throw line.

It was the first time the Caltech Men's Basketball team has passed the 100 point mark in a regular season game since a 104-53 win over Life College in 1974. It was the first time in 51 years the team has scored over 100 points against a SCIAC opponent.

Earlier in the week, the team lost to Occidental College, 33-77. Hires had seven points and five blocks in that contest.

Men's Basketball comes close again against Whittier

For the second straight week, the Caltech's Men's Basketball team came tantalizingly close to ending its SCIAC Conference drought.

Freshman Nick Goeden set the tone early on with physical play inside. Junior Jordan Carlson was sensational, scoring 21 points and going 14 of 15 from the free-throw line. Freshman Bryan Hires added 16 points to keep Caltech in contention.

With just under three minutes to play, Freshman Michael Underhill hit a huge three pointer to put Caltech ahead. On the very next possession, Freshman Paxon Frady scored a tough inside basket, causing the Caltech fans to drown out the local Whittier crowd. Score: Caltech 66, Whittier 63. But in the next four possessions Caltech hit only on shot and suffered three turnovers to allow a a Whittier comeback.

Earlier in the week, the team lost to Pomona-Pitzer 40-73. Carlson was once again the team's leading scorer with 13 points.

For the week, Carlson averaged 17.5 points per game, with 4.5 rebounds. He hit on 17 of 18 free-throws; an outstanding 94.4%.

Freshman Bryan Hires averaged nine points, and his 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists averages were both team highs. Senior Christian Guitierrez continued to provide three-point shooting off the bench, hitting three of his five shots. His 7.5 ppg scoring average for this past week was third on the team behind Carlson and Hires.

The team plays next at home this Wednesday against Occidental College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.

With 7:12 remaining in the game, a free throw by Carlson put Caltech within 2 at 46-48. But Claremont finished the game on an 11-1 run to preserve the win.

It was the closest Caltech has come to winning a SCIAC game since a four point loss to Occidental in the 1996-97 season. Caltech has not won a SCIAC Men's Basketball Varsity game since a 48-47 win over LaVerne in the 1984-85 season.

Season so far - Men's Basketball: Improvements across the board

The Men's Basketball team has shown consistent improvement in virtually all aspects of their game this season.

Scoring has increased by 30 percent over last season, backed by the return of Junior Jordan Carlson, who leads the team with a 10.1 points per game average, and the emergence of newcomer Freshman Bryan Hires, averaging 8.1 points per game. The more aggressive offense has allowed the squad to get to the line much more often, with free throw attempts up 64 percent.

The defense has tightened up as well, with opponent scoring down 20 percent, largely as a result of the interior defense and shot-blocking of Carlson and Hires and the perimeter defense of returning Juniors Scott Davies and team captain Day Ivy.

Freshman Guard Paxon Frady has helped the ball-handling improve. Junior Tyler Drake and Freshman Nick Goeden have given the team two key contributors off the bench.

Over the winter break, the team hosted two successful Holiday Tournaments that featured talented teams from all over the country. On Sunday the team played one of its most competitive games of the season against Dominican University of Illinois, coming within four points at halftime before a late Dominican surge led to a 11 point Caltech loss.

2003-2004 Season Review

Caltech Men's Basketball team finished its second season under Head Coach Roy Dow. Against Pomona-Pitzer on Senior Night, the team had arguably its best first half of the season, cutting their deficit to 11 at the start of the second half off of a 3 pointer by Senior Kenny Ly before fading down the stretch. Before the game, Ly and fellow Senior Colin Dundas were honored in a pre-game ceremony in honor of Senior Night. Ly leaves Caltech as one of the best three-point shooters in school history, averaging more than one 3 pointer made per game. Dundas provided tremendous leadership for a program in a state of transition. This year's team had many bright spots during a difficult season. Sophomore Guard Day Ivy was a terror on defense with a team-high 45 steals. His 2.14 steals/game in league games placed him second in the conference. Ivy also lead the team in rebounding, blocked shots and minute played. Fellow Sophomore Guard Scott Davies led the team in scoring, assists and free throw shooting. Junior Guard Chris Gutierrez had the team's season high in scoring with an 18-point effort against Cal Lutheran. Freshman Guard Joe Koehler became a mainstay in the starting lineup as a result of his size and hard work on defense. Congratulations to the whole team for their hard work and dedication.
