Men’s Water Polo hosts Classic Tourney; falls short against Maritime, Chapman
The Caltech Men’s Water Polo team kicked off the month of October with an exciting week, starting with their annual Caltech Classic Tournament, attended by teams from La Verne, St. Mary’s, Cal Maritime and Chapman University.
Junior Daniel Oliver made the All-Tournament team, as he provided excellent offense and defense in losses to St. Mary’s and La Verne.
Two more matches resulted in disappointing losses. The team played well again Cal Maritime, with a 7-7 score at the end of the first half, before falling 15-11. Against Chapman later in the week, Caltech was tied at halftime and came within a 9-8 in the third period before falling 17-10.
For the week, Senior Ben Olsen led Caltech in scoring with 13 goals in four matches. Junior Tom Jurczak was second with nine. Oliver finished with seven. Junior Goalkeeper Kurtis Ras had 19 blocks.
The team plays next this weekend at the Cal Maritime Invitational.

Men's Water Polo makes comeback; falls just short against Chapman
The Caltech Men's Water Polo team staged a massive comeback in their match against Chapman University
on Wednesday evening, falling just short in a 11-12 loss.
Caltech fell behind 4-0 early, and found itself down 10-5 early in the third quarter. But led by Junior Tom Jurczak,
Caltech stormed back, outscoring the Panthers 5-2 late in the fourth quarter. Jurczak's goal with 22 seconds remaining
cut the lead to one, but Caltech couldn't get off another shot. Jurczak led all scorers with seven goals.
The team plays its next match next Saturday the 24th as they host their annual Alumni game. The match begins at 11:00 AM.

Men's Water Polo wraps up season at SCIAC Championships
The Men's Water Polo team wrapped up its season this past weekend at the SCIAC Conference Championships. They finished 0-3, losing to Redlands, La Verne and Occidental.
Sophomore Dan Oliver lead the team with five goals at the Championships, including four against La Verne.
Senior Jason Lee had four goals, and Senior Goalkeeper Paul Walli had 13 blocks.
Oliver was named the team's MVP for the 2004 season. He finished the season with 35 goals, 32 assists, 32 steals and 116 errors drawn.
The team finishes the season with a record of 4-18. Highlights of the season included a 9-8 win over Occidental that briefly thrust Caltech into the Top 10 Rankings.

Men's Water Polo wins tough Alumni Match
The Men's Water Polo team won their annual Alumni Match on Saturday, by a score of 8-6.
Senior Jason Lee lead the way with three goals and three steals for Caltech, while five
other Beavers each contributed a goal. Sophomore Daniel Oliver had four assists and two steals.
Former Caltech All-American Eagle Jones lead the Alumni with three goals. Alumnus Adam
Thomason added two more as the Alumni threatened to rally in the fourth period, before
falling just two goals short.
Earlier in the week, the team suffered a loss to Chapman University, losing 19-9.
Oliver had two goals, three assists, and three steals in the effort, while Senior Logan
Linderman added two goals and an assist. Despite the loss, Caltech went into the week having
cracked the Men's Division III National Collegiate Top 10 Poll for the first time in a
decade, following their shocking win against SCIAC rival Occidental College.
The team plays its next match this Saturday as it hosts the Caltech Classic Tournament.

2003 Season Review
To close the season, the Men's Water Polo team had a 1-2 record at the
SCIAC Conference Championships, giving them an overall conference record
of 2-8, good for 7th place in the conference. Top performances at the
conference championships included Senior Ben Solecki and Freshman Tom
Jurczak who each had four goals over the course of three matches, and
Senior Kai Sung, who provided tremendous defense.
The team's top offensive
performers over the course of the season were Seniors Jim Rebesco and
Erik Granstedt. For his efforts, Granstedt was named the team's 2003 Most
Valuable Player. Congratulations to the whole team on a great season.
