2006-07 In Review - A Banner Year for Women's Basketball

As the season comes to a close, the Caltech women’s basketball team is beaming with accomplishments.
Everywhere they look there are signs of their incredible season. Historic seems more fitting. The list reads like wish list, but the efforts of the eleven ladies in uniform transformed those wishes into reality.

Back in October at the first goal setting meeting, the team decided it wanted to win. Not just any game, but a SCIAC game. That was a lofty goal especially since no team before them had been able to pull off that feat. Women’s Basketball joined the SCIAC in the 2001-2002 season and it had been “0-fer” until that fateful night in early January. The team knocked off Pomona Pitzer in dramatic fashion with a 55-53 victory. Then lightening struck a second time, in almost the exact same spot. The team knocked Whittier down with a 54-52 win. Both wins were at the wire with 0pponents missing a last second attempt in hopes of forcing overtime.

The post game scene looked as if it has just leaped out of a movie, with the crowd pouring on to the floor and surrounding the happy Beavers. “It was a great moment. The fans were all there as we worked through the crowd to find each other. All I could think about was that we finally did it. They have wanted it for so long and worked so hard to get it…it was just great to see them finally have that feeling!” noted Tech Head Coach Sandra Marbut.

When the books finally went into the season, the team had accomplished a slew of things to be proud of. The margin of loss had been drastically reduced. Only four short seasons ago the team lost on an average of 70 points. This season finished just over 20. Caltech’s all time leading scorer changed, as Lindsay King grabbed that milestone. Rene Davis took control of the record for most double doubles in a season and on a career.
The team took the record book to town and shattered a number of records. For the 3 rd straight season, the team broke the single season team scoring record, and this time by more than 200 points. And the highest single game score within SCIAC now belongs to this season’s efforts.

The recognition of the Techers efforts ranged from local to national. The tail end of a story done by ESPN about the men’s team featured the post game celebration for the first win against Pomona (click here)

Then the Hallmark Channel came to do a story about inspiring women. The segment follows Rene Davis, Raquel Martinez, and Diana Dou through their day and is set to air Monday April 9 th at 7am. D3Hoops.com, the National News center for Division III basketball even got in on the action, doing a feature piece on the team. “Technically Winning” can be found in the D3Hoops Archives. (click here)

Finally women’s basketball magazine interviewed a few Techers for its story on the team, coming out in the April edition. That is a lot of press for a team who was 0-25 last season, and finished 3-22 on this campaign.
“I think a number of people saw the progress we were able to make this season, and knew that something special was happening,” said Marbut. “I believe that Caltech is the quintessential collegiate program, where it is about school 100%. In today’s world of college sports, that intrigues a lot of people. Toss in the math and science focus, and the reputation the school has and people are genuinely curious. We are the underdog that everybody wants to cheer for,” adds Marbut.

Likely the final contribution to the team’s list this season will be Rene Davis’ spot on the All Conference team. Chosen for the All SCIAC 2 nd team, Davis is the first women’s basketball player to ever be chosen. She is only the 3 rd female student athlete from a team sport at Caltech to receive such honors. Two women’s water polo players have received the award as well.
Rene points to the progress the honor marks for the program as a whole. “I could not have had the season I did without my team.  They were as much a part of this as anything.  It is nice to be recognized, but what is more important to me is that the conference is recognizing how far our program has come.  The important name on the certificate is Caltech,” noted Davis. Gracious in her acknowledgement of her team’s efforts, Davis reflects the values this team has.  “I know it has been a great year for me, but more importantly it has been a great year for our team.”  Well said Rene!

March 6, 2007 - Women’s Basketball Honored with All- SCIAC selection; Rene Davis makes 2nd Team

The progress of the women’s basketball program continues as the program has its first player named to All SCIAC honors since joining the SCIAC for the 2001-2002 season.  On the heels of its first conference wins, “Firsts” seem to be the order of the day for the program as Junior Rene Davis was honored with a spot on All SCIAC second team.

After averaging 12.8 points and 11.1 rebounds per game, Davis credits her teammates and accepts the honor on behalf of the hard work the whole roster has put in.

“I know it has been a great year for me, but more importantly it has been a great year for our team.”  And what a year it has been.  A record breaking performances were everywhere on the team’s season, as the team shattered the single season scoring record for a third straight year.  A number of other records fell as well proving that this team means business.  Individual efforts made the team strides even bigger as Rene becomes the first player to average a double double for the program, and teammate Lindsay King became the all time leading scorer.  Rene joins a very short list of Caltech female student athletes involved in team sports.  Only three Caltech women have grabbed the All SCIAC honor.  Two women’s water polo players have been selected, and Davis now brings the total to three. Davis’ honors are a fitting end to a great season for the ladies.  And without a senior on the roster, Caltech fans should expect more in 2007-08!

(Jan 13, 2007) Pasadena, CA - History was made tonight before a capacity crowd in Caltech's Braun Gymnasium when the Caltech Women's Basketball team won for the first time ever in conference (SCIAC) play upending the visiting Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens by a score of 55-53.
Just one week after the Caltech Men broke their 207 game losing streak, the Caltech women hoopsters found themselves in a familiar setting trailing the Sagehens at the half by a score of 22-28. The second half would yield a different and exciting result.
Leading the way in scoring for the Caltech women were junior guard/forward Rene Davis with 18 points, freshman guard Lisa Yee and junior guard /forward Lindsey King with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Tonight's victory is the first ever against both an NCAA Division III and SCIAC opponent. Caltech began playing women's basketball in 1995 as an Independent until joining the SCIAC as a varsity team in 2002.
Caltech is coached by Sandra Marbut who is in her fourth year at the helm of the program and while making steady progress was elated with the milestone victory over Pomona-Pitzer

2006-07 Season Preview

With fall weather arriving in Southern California, the Caltech team prepares to take the court for the 2006-07 season, the team has a great deal of work to do, but arrives at school in the best shape they have ever been in. That could prove valuable as the team works to learn everything it needs for the first official competition against CSU East Bay on November 17th.

Few Caltech teams have has the advantage of bringing an experienced and mature team to the court for competition, but this Tech team does. Returning four juniors and a sophomore, the team has been well versed in the demands of the SCIAC. Four starters in the 05-06 season will be back, with team captains Lindsay King and Rene Davis leading the way. Meghan Kelleher and Raquel Martinez shared a starting position and both return to the court ready to go. King and Davis were major impacts in the SCIAC last year teaming up for a solid showing the conference stats. Fans can expect to see both putting up solid numbers and great performances. Returning sophomore and starter, Lea Kunesh had great breakout season as a freshman averaging just under the 10 ppg mark, and is expected to be even more of a factor in her second season. Kunesh is used to stepping it up, coming from the storied Carlsbad program, where she was a member of the team which won the San Diego CIF Section two years ago.

Returning to the team after a season off is the squad's lone senior. Diana Lin had been concentrating on tennis, and returns to the team for part of the season this year. slated as the possible #2 player on the Caltech Women's team, Lin makes a comeback for her last year on the basketball court. Three sports keep Lin busy, starting in fall with cross-country, basketball and then tennis, Diana brings her great speed to the court. A tenacious defender, she has quickness to add to the asset list for the Beavers.

The returners greet two newcombers destined to make themselves know to the Caltech record books. A 3-2 transfer, Amanda Bozovich, joins the team from conference rival Occidental College. Playing only two years at Oxy, Boz has two years of eligibility remaining to lend to the Beavers. Her skill on the perimeter gives the team some added range from downtown. The biggest group to swell the ranks is again the freshman class. The key to the freshman class hinges on Lisa Yee. Yee is a standout from the LA Unified Section of the CIF, and was a leading scorer in the Northern League. Yee is expected to contribute immediately to the team's success.

Rounding out the team is a foresome of freshman. Christine Woodin, Kathryn Gunn, Diana Dou and Julianne Gould join Teach bringing a variety of experiences from all over the country. All four will learn to Beaver system and see playing time through the season. Giving Tech important depth, look for any of these newcombers to add to the already experienced team in a positive way.

Caltech open its season at Braun Athletic Center with a pair of games tip off weekend. Both CSU East Bay and College of Saint Catherine's visit the Techers for the first official weekend of NCAA play on November 17th (6:30pm) and 18th (3:00pm). The following weekend is the Caltech Thanksgiving Classic with Elmhurst College (IL), Macalaster College (MN) and Southwestern College (AZ) taking the floor.
