Women's Basketball
Sophomore Lindsay King lead the team last season in scoring, rebounding and assists. |
September 22nd, 2005 Women's Basketball : Season Preview
The Caltech Women’s basketball program is coming off one of the best seasons on record for the young program. Women took the court for the first time in collegiate competition in 1997 at Caltech and in 2001 the team became a full SCIAC member. With such a short history, many names and teams have opportunities to impact program records, and no team has seized that opportunity like the 2004-2005 roster. With 8 team records, seven records for play against SCIAC schools, and six individuals records set last season, the program ushers in a new light for its future. As students return to campus for the 2005-2006 year, one can only wonder what the next improvement will be.
“We have great momentum coming into this season. Last year was such a awakening for our players. They got a taste of what is possible, and now with seasoned veterans, and our incoming freshman class, I think we can build on foundation and keep that momentum moving in the right direction,” said Caltech Head Coach, Sandra Marbut.
The graduation of four seniors would have appeared to have left a big gap on the team. “We will miss our senior class, but I have great confidence in the ladies who are back with us and you will see them all grow into their expanded roles. It won’t take long for those new roles to feel like an old hat…comfortable and familiar,” says Marbut.
The leadership will come to the team in the Captains Trio of senior Shelby Montague, junior Lisa Tran and sophomore Lindsay King. “Shelby has shown great leadership and intensity already in the off season working with her younger teammates to remind them the hard work happens when you aren’t on campus during the summer months,” commented Marbut. “Shelby will do a great job setting the tone early in our preseason.” Montague will likely break the record for the most games played, set a year ago by former teammate Andrea Kung, if she has even part of the season she has had over the last three years. She will be the second four year player to graduate in the last two years, marking great progress and consistency for the program. Tran, coming off one of her best offensive seasons, will have an increased role this year and be asked to blend her abilities even more into the team scoring punch. Lindsay King, the team’s leading scorer in 04-05, returns with more game experience than any other player in the SCIAC. King lead the conference in minutes played at the conclusion of the 04-05 season, and that time on the floor will serve her well.
Rounding out the returners will be senior Angela Magee, Junior Diana Lin and Sophomores Rene Davis, Meghan Kelleher, and Raquel Martinez. Magee and Lin return for their second and third years on the team respectively and both will likely find great improvement in what they can contribute to the team. Kelleher comes back to the team after a surprising season her first year. “Meghan shocked the Caltech scene with her ability to shoot the three and to play in the reserve point position. Injuries put her in a place where she had to handle the ball, be our go to person, and she did a great job,” mentions Coach Marbut. Watch for that hands on experience to help Meghan this year. Raquel Martinez also found she would be in a bigger role than she first expected. “When Raquel joined us, she wasn’t sure what was ahead, and neither were we. Big smiles crossed all of our faces when we saw the raw talent and potential Raquel had and gained over the course of the season,” said Marbut.
“Both Meghan and Raquel can expect their roles to expand this year because they have earned it!” However the biggest gain was made by Rene Davis. Sidelined with an injury early in the season for more than eight weeks, Rene was only able to return to the roster late in January. And return she did…burning up the conference with her shooting and skill with the ball. “I don’t think we have even begun to see what Rene is capable of and I am excited to see what she will accomplish this year. She is going to play a very big role in what we do this year, and I think shock a lot of people,” comments Coach Marbut.
Newcomers to the team help fill vacancies created by the graduating seniors. Freshman Natalie Vernia from Calabasas, CA will help add both rebounding power and shooting touch to the Caltech arsenal. “I have watched Natalie play through her senior year, and I think she is another young lady who will blossom in the college game. I think we will see good things and versatility from Natalie this year,” said Coach Marbut. Along side Natalie, fans will find Lea Kunesh of Oceanside, CA. Lea played on the fierce Carlsbad High School squad, a team who won San Diego Section of CIF and advanced two rounds in Division I State playoffs before falling to eventual State Runner up Canyon Springs. “Lea brings us added attack on the perimeter, and will play a big role in what we accomplish this year. It is going to be great to have a player with Lea’s playoff experience on the team, and I see great things for her in her first year of college ball.” Finally, newcomer Marie Giron added to the program.
“We are excited to see what Marie will bring to the team. We have had such great additions (Kelleher and Martinez in recently history) to the team who we did not know about until just before school started. I fully expect Marie to be just as pleasant an addition to the program as other players have been,” said Marbut.
The team begins its season with three scrimmages, hoping to use the practice games to prepare for the tough season ahead. With its first completely NCAA Division III schedule in program history, the team is ambitious in its goals. Caltech opens on the road at the University of Puget Sound Tournament tip off weekend on November 18th with tough UPS as its first contender. The ladies follow that game with Northwest opponent Linfield College. “These are great games to start with as they really will show us what we have to get done to be ready in January for our conference. We’ll play UPS and LC in November and then again a month later in December, so it gives us a chance to see our growth over the four weeks. We’ll have another mark in January when we start SCIAC play, and we will have been well versed in what it takes when the conference schedule arrives,” outlines Coach Marbut. Caltech’s home opener will begin with its Annual Thanksgiving Tournament and hosting Cal Maritime Academy,
along with Rose Hulman Institute of Indiana and Worcester Polytechnic Institute from Massachusetts.

Senior Forward Andrea Kung has been a key member of the Caltech Women's Basketball team since joining up her Sophomore year.
A Chemistry major from Edison, New Jersey, Kung attended Caltech largely because of the superior education and greater array of career options that would be available to her upon graduation.

For her career, Kung has appeared in 63 Women's Basketball games and averages 2.9 points and 2.5 rebounds a game. Kung's contributions to the program extend far beyond mere numbers. Head Coach Sandra Marbut comments:
“A year ago, Andrea was the driving force behind Caltech even having a team. Since my first day was October 1st and practice started 14 days later,
Andrea really spearheaded the efforts over the summer. Without her hard word
and persistence, some of the ladies may not have come out for the team. I credit Andrea with keeping the Women's Basketball program on track through a number of staffing changes.”
Kung will graduate with her class this June. She plans on taking some time off after graduation before pursuing her career.

2004-2005 Season Preview
As the ladies of the Caltech Women's Basketball contemplate the season to come, they know it is
full of firsts. The 2004-2005 season is marked with a couple of historical milestones hoping to
ignite a new tradition for the team.
To start the year, seven Caltech players are returning to the program from the previous season.
In the nine previous seasons, the women's team has never had more than 3-4 players return from
the previous campaign. With seven coming back, the Caltech ladies experience a new phenomenon -
they aren't starting from scratch! "This is key in creating a program where we can build a
tradition. It is really tough to start new with new faces every year, and my hat goes off to the
Caltech coaches before me who were able to start with such a small core each year," says current
Caltech Head Coach, Sandra Marbut.
Another first to add to returners is the addition of five student athletes who will enter Caltech
knowing they plan to play on the team. "To say we recruited these young ladies is almost
accurate…no one comes to Caltech for anything other than an education. However, we worked hard to
introduce Caltech to these young ladies, and explore their options to play. Once they were admitted
on their academic talents, we were happy to confirm they intend to be a big part of our team,"
commented Marbut. Only one player prior to this season had been "recruited" in the Caltech sense.
Ada Yu was the last impact player who chose Caltech for the academic programs but also knew she
wanted to play ball before she arrived on campus. Often this resulted in a high percentage of the
team either learning to play in college or returning to play after a long absence. "This year, we
are very fortunate three young ladies knew they wanted to play as they were exploring Caltech, and
two more were admitted and discovered the team after admission. All five have previous playing
experience which really adds a great second layer to our core returning from last season," notes
Coach Marbut.
Finally, the third element the team will be experiencing for the first time is a growth in the number
of players on campus filling the roster to the brim. With the addition of four players joining the
team from the Caltech community, the team will actually use all the uniforms Tech has. "So many times
last season it was tough to have practice because we finished the year with eight players. If even one
person was sick or had too much schoolwork to come to practice…we couldn't even scrimmage. To have so
many young ladies ready to play and interested in making the commitment to the team…well, it is a great
step forward for us," said Coach Marbut.
With all the big gains the team has made, the year looks bright. "What exactly a bright future will
translate into is still unknown. Our team goals revolve around winning a game or two, becoming more
competitive, and continuing to build on what we have begun. Those are the signs of a good year for us.
Anything above that…well, it is icing on the cake," said Marbut.
2003-2004 Year in Review The Women's Basketball team finished its first season under
Head Coach Sandra Marbut. Despite a difficult campaign, the team had a number of bright spots.
Sophomore Forward-Center
Shelby Montague led the team in scoring, rebounding, blocked shots and steals. Junior Forward
Andrea Kung finished second in scoring and tied for the team led in total assists. Freshman
Forward Lisa Tran provided played strong defense and by the end of the season had emerged as
an impressive rebounder. Both Montague and Tran finished ranked among the SCIAC's top 20
players in rebounding average. Freshman Point Guard Diana Lin arguably improved more than any
other player over the course of the season. Lin's turnovers fell dramatically as the season wore
on, and she showed improved poise and leadership. Before last Monday's home finale against
Redlands, Senior Dagny Looper was honored by teammates in a pre-game ceremony. Looper tied for
the team lead in assists despite missing nearly half the season as she was abroad during the
first academic quarter. Congratulations to Dagny and the rest of the team for persevering
through the season.
