CALTECH SCHOOLS MILLS COLLEGE 8-1!

Chen Yee Liaw

3/03/07 Caltech surged ahead 3-0 after doubles on Saturday. Sarah Wadsworth and Ellen Hsu held off a come back from Mills College's #2 doubles team to close out the Pro Set 8-6. This was a great accomplishment for Sarah and Ellen and a sign of significant improvement. Mills College responded well in singles play and it looked like Caltech could loose the match with 4 players down significantly in the first set and 1 match on serve! But the Beavers showed tremendous courage to fight back. Leslie Tong began attacking serve and turned a 5-2 deficit into a set victory in a tiebreaker and eventually won the match in 3. Ellen Hsu also came back to win in 3 after losing the first set. Little Ms. Dependable at #6 was also down the first but held off a quick and steady Mill's opponent to win also in 3 sets. With (3) three set wins in singles and Chen Yee Liaw and Diana Lin winning comfortably the Beavers cinched the victory 8-1. The Beavers have a break from match play while they complete their final examinations and will be back in action against Hope International in Fullerton on Saturday, March 17th.

THE BEAVERS ROLL THE REGALS TO GET THEIR FIRST SCIAC WIN OF THE SEASON!
2/17/07 On another blistering hot day in Pasadena, CA the Caltech Beavers turned in a gutsy performance to beat Cal Lutheran 6-3. The Beavers earned 2 decisive doubles points at the #2 and #3 positions. Teaming up for the first time were Diana Lin ( Huntington Beach, CA) and Chen Yee Liaw (Petaling Jaya, Selangor) at #2. Lin and Liaw were just too tough in their 8-2 win. Liaw skillfully put the ball away with pinpoint accuracy while Lin held her ground at net under a barrage of attempted passing shots. Also teaming up for the first time were Leslie Tong ( Ventura, CA) and Kelly Lin ( Alhambra, CA) who earned the Beavers second point with their 8-5 win. After going ahead 2-1 in doubles play, Chen Yee Liaw realized, "we are never in this position . . . we always trail (after doubles)." In singles competition Chen Yee Liaw at #1 performed another meticulous dissection of her opponent 6-1, 6-1. The next Techer off the court was Kelly Lin at #6 who earned a savvy win ousting her opponent 6-1, 6-4. This put the Beavers 4-1 up in the match and only needed 1 more point to win their first SCIAC win of the season. However, the Regal ’ s won the next 2 points as Diana Lin and Sarah Wadsworth ( Prescott, AZ) came up short. With the match score now at 4-3 Leslie Tong at #5 and Ellen Hsu at #3 matches became quite interesting. Tong won a close first set 6-4 with steady groundstroking and solid serving. Tong ’ s game went to another level in the second set and used sharp angles to dismantle her opponent ’ s game and win the second set 6-1. Tong earned the winning point for the Beavers, which took the pressure off Ellen Hsu ( Holmdel, NJ) who was in a grinder at the #3 spot. Hsu turned in the gutsiest performance of the day earning hard fought 7-6 (3), 7-5 victory. Hsu relied on patience and determination to put the icing on the cake on a delicious day. Post match the Beavers hit Lake Avenue ’ s Zono Sushi to celebrate their victory thanks to the Beaver ’ s SuperFan, Mae Tong!

Next up for the Beavers is Biola University on Friday, February 23 followed by a SCIAC match against the University of Redlands Bulldogs on Saturday, February 24.

In the deciding doubles match at #2, Ellen Hsu and Sarah Wadsworth ran ahead 7-4 but the Beavers could not hold off the Mustang's gallant fight back and eventually fell 9-8 in a close tiebreaker.
