Women’s Tennis: Looking ahead to SCIACs

The Women’s Tennis team lost matches to Claremont Mudd-Scripps and Chapman University this past weekend, losing 0-9 in both matches.

Junior Jennifer Hsiao had one of Caltech’s best performances, losing a 6-1, 5-7 (10-7) tie-breaker. Senior Ann Leu also went an extra point, losing 5-7, 6-2 (10-4).

The team finishes its regular season with a 4-11 record, with a 1-6 record in the SCIAC Conference. The team is now gearing up for the Conference Championships this weekend, April 15th–16th. Some players will continue their season with invitations to the Ojai Division III Invitational April 22nd—24th.

Women’s Tennis Recap: Losses to Occidental; Redlands

The Caltech Women’s Tennis team lost two SCIAC matches this past Saturday, both to SCIAC Conference opponents, First, the team played at Occidental College in the morning, losing 0-9. Senior Ann Leu gave a tremendous effort at #3 singles before falling short in a tie-breaker. The team later lost at home to the University of Redlands, 0-9.

The team plays their final regular season matches this weekend on the road at Claremont Mudd-Scripps and at home against Chapman University. These will be their final matches before the SCIAC Championships, April 15-16.

Women's Tennis Recap: Losses to Lewis & Clark; Westmont

The Caltech Women's Tennis team lost matches to Lewis & Clark College, 1-5, and to Westmont College, 0-9, this past week.

Junior Jennifer Hsiao was once again Caltech's standout player. Hsiao won Caltech's sole point in the Lewis & Clark match, winning at #1 singles. Hsiao also had an impressive performance against Westmont, taking Westmont's #1 singles player to brink before falling short in a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) result.

The team's record currently stands at 4-6, with five matches still remaining on the schedule before the SCIAC Conference Championships.

Their next match comes this Friday at the University of La Verne. Their next home match is Saturday, April 2nd against the University of Redlands. The match begins at 2:00 PM.

Women's Tennis Recap: Hsiao comes up strong against Whitworth

The Caltech Women's Tennis team lost 2-7 to visiting Whitworth College this past Saturday.

Junior Jennifer Hsiao provided a bright spot for the team, easily winning her #1 singles match, 6-4, 6-1 and teaming up with Senior Ann Leu to triumph at #1 doubles, 8-0.

Friday's match against Skidmore College was cancelled due to rain. No makeup date has been scheduled as of yet.

Hsiao has been a consistent performer for Caltech this season, where she's been at the #1 singles and #1 doubles spots for most of her matches. Hsiao has gone 4-4 in singles and 4-4 in doubles matches, despite usually playing against the opposing team's best players. She's faced top competition both from SCIAC opponents and challenging non-conference foes.

The team's record currently stands at 4-4, showing great progress over last year's 5-13 finish.

The team's next scheduled home match comes April 2nd against the University of Redlands. The match begins at 2:00 PM.

Women's Tennis Recap: With win over Whittier, Caltech lays claim to winning record

The Caltech Women's Tennis team is off to a 4-3 start after trouncing Whittier College this past Thursday, by a score of 8-1.

The most thrilling match of the day came at #2 singles, as Sophomore Diana Lin battled back after losing the first set, to win in tie-breaks by a final of 0-6, 7-5 (10-6). Lin also teamed with Freshman Sarah Wadsworth to win at #3 doubles, 8-1.

Wadsworth, Seniors Ann Leu, Tracy Janov and Rachel Yohay each swept their singles matches in straight sets, and all three Caltech doubles teams won rather easily.

The team bounced back well from a defeat earlier in the week, a 9-0 loss to Vassar College.

It's the best start for Women's Tennis since the start of the 2000 season.

Caltech came into the match with a 3-3 record, having already defeated teams from La Sierra, Masters College and Mills College earlier this season. It's the team's first conference win since they defeated Whittier over a year ago.

The team plays its next match Friday, March 18th at home against Skidmore College.

Women's Tennis falls to Pomona-Pitzer

The Women's Tennis team lost to Pomona-Pitzer this past weekend, 9-0.

Senior Ann Leu gave the best effort of the day in her 3-6, 2-6 loss at #3 singles.

The team should fare better this Friday at home against Mills College. The match begins at 10:00 AM.

Women's Tennis pulls out tough one against Masters College

The Women's Tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season after their 5-4 win over Masters College this past Saturday.

At #2 singles, Jenny Hsiao provided a huge boost of momentum for Caltech, as she came back to win in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

The match came down to the #3 singles spot, where Caltech's Ann Leu was engaged in an epic battle against her opponent. Leu saved a match point, and finally emerged triumphant in a stunning 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) victory.

The team plays its next match this Saturday at home against Cal Lutheran. The match begins at 9:30 AM.

Women's Tennis wins opener against La Sierra

In their season opener this past Sunday against La Sierra University, the Caltech Women's Tennis team looked sharp, winning six matches to three.

Junior Jenny Hsiao won a thrilling back-and-forth match at #2 singles, 7-6, 2-6, 10-7. Caltech won singles matches on seeds three through six, all in straight sets.

At #1 doubles, Ann Leu and Jenny Hsiao teamed up to win a hard fought match, breaking an 8-8 tie with a final score of 9-8 (7-5).

It was more than enough to put Caltech over the top.

Caltech's next match comes this Saturday at home against Masters College. The match is scheduled to begin at 9:30 AM. Their conference opener will be the following Saturday, February 12th, at home against Cal Lutheran, also at 9:30 AM.

2004 Season Review
The Women's Tennis team finished its season with losses to La Verne and Cal Lutheran in the SCIAC Championships. Sophomore Jenny Hsaio won both her singles and doubles matches against La Verne in the loss. The team's performance this season represented considerable improvement from last year's 0-21 record. Congratulations to the whole team.
