September 1, 2007 - Volleyball Returns...
While many of us are wilting from the summer heat, not so the Caltech women's volleyball team! This squad of fifteen, under the guidance of Coach Maureen Burl, is bringing on their own kind of heat, the kind that comes from hard hitting, solid blocking, and amazing digging. The team returns the majority of the roster from the 06 season, giving it a good base to start from, and adds a strong frosh class to bring depth and talent to Tech. Senior captains Sarah Stidham and Erin White will be looked to for the team leadership on and of the court, and both are experienced at performing under pressure. Stidham expands her roll this year, getting to play offense as well as setter. White will also expand her role as off season shoulder issues change her game. Both know the SCIAC well enough to know what the competition brings to the court.
In addition to the seniors, returning sophomore Lisa Yee brings versatility. Yee was a strong hitter last season, and will provide strong offense and a big block again this season on the right side. However, Yee will also be learning to set. Her soft touch on the ball is promising and helps to add the depth the team needs in the setting position. Middle blocker Marie Giron also returns with two years as a starter under her belt to provide the team with tough protection at the net. The team has depth in all positions thanks to returning players Ankita Mishra, Tencia Lee, Carolyn Valdez, Lauren Lee and Karen Wang.
The growth in numbers is attributed to both the stability that Burl provides and one of the largest frosh classes the program has seen. Five frosh are on the floor for the preseason, all of which are expected to contribute. Members of the frosh class have the talent and drive to compete for starting spots, bringing the team many more options. Watch for frosh Kati Peters and Sarah Griffis to add to the Beavers attack at both the outside and middle as starters. Frosh Deboki Chakravarti and Ying-Ying Tran bring strength and depth to the outside and libero positions respectively. Elizabeth Mak, new to the sport, has already shown promising improvement and determination.
Although the SCIAC is arguably one of the top conference in the country, as Southern California continues its domination of the volleyball world, Tech moves in the right direction. Up and coming in the years to come, this could be the start of an exciting era for the Beavers!
